Breaking — Real Facebook Oversight Board On Irish GDPR Investigation: Facebook Finally Faces Justice for Massive Data Breach
Today’s news that the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has launched an inquiry into Facebook’s recent 533 million user data breach is a global game changer — a critical step towards accountability.
This was a shocking breach of 533 million Facebook users’ data. Even more shocking was Facebook’s refusal to notify users that their private information had been spilled across the internet. This flagrant abuse of people’s personal data cannot go on. We welcome the actions of the Irish Data Protection Commission and hope it will be able to hold Facebook to account.
The Real Facebook Oversight Board was understood to be the first organization to alert the Irish Data Protection Commission to the data breach, spurring their investigation. Last week, we asked Facebook a set of questions related to the breach. It refused to answer. We welcome the Irish Data Protection Commission’s action, which could yield answers and justice in this appalling breach of Facebook users data and trust.
